The Effective Director Programme, Hamilton

Overview

This three day face to face course draws on theory, practice, and the collective knowledge of the participants to explore the foundational aspects of governance - governance, strategy and finance. It is a challenging and rewarding learning experience that will consolidate your understanding of the role of the director and the board.

The three course modules are delivered over three days by experienced facilitators with director experience, who will share their own real world experiences to aid your learning. Each module includes a mix of presentations, discussions, case studies and simulated situations. You will meet and network with peers across sectors.

In preparation for best individual learning, participants will be provided with pre-course reading material and will be asked to complete a short self-reflective survey about their governance knowledge and experience. A further survey will be completed three months after the course to enable participants to reflect on the implementation of their learning.

Comprehensive course materials and a complimentary copy of The Fish Rots from the Head authored by Bob Garratt are provided.

On successful completion you will receive the Governance New Zealand Effective Director Certificate.

Facilitators

Dr Peter Crow, Governance - Day 1

Peter is an accredited company director, advisor and educator with an extensive international record helping elevate organisational performance. Contributions include service on the boards of private companies, family firms and social enterprises, advice to boards, institutions and governments, delivery of director education and post-graduate courses, speaking and writing, and governance research. He holds a doctorate in governance and strategy and is a chartered member of the Institute of Directors.

Bill Ross, Finance - Day 2

Bill is currently a self-employed business consultant and company Director. He currently runs his own consulting business which includes business advisory, accounting and board governance. He has previously been a partner in a firm of Chartered Accountants in London, been in various financial and general management roles and has spent the last fifteen years in a business advisory capacity. He has had experience in CA practices, importing and distribution, FMCG, logistics and freight forwarding, produce exporting and also in public floats and the sale and acquisition of private businesses. Jo Cribb, Strategy & Risk - Day 3

Jo is a Women in Governance Award winner receiving the award for Not-for-Profit Governance Leader in 2021. An experienced consultant who has led a variety of projects and assignments, Jo is regularly asked to facilitate strategy sessions with leadership teams, coach emerging leaders and lead substantial policy, strategy and gender projects. Recent assignments include evaluating Sport NZ's gender equity in governance policy, leading sessions at APEC 2023 on gender equality in customs and border agencies, working with the New Zealand Defence Force's leadership team on the gender diversity of the forces, and completing a gender analysis of immigration policy. Jo was the previous Chief Executive of the Ministry for Women. One of the youngest Chief Executives ever appointed in the New Zealand Public Service, she has invested her time and energy in advancing the cause of the vulnerable in society, spearheading some of the most difficult issues of our time, including child abuse, child poverty, family violence and vulnerable women.
