Getting it straight

For those companies at the larger end of the spectrum, the idea of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is nothing new.  Many of them will have helped their local community as they grew, likely from before CSR was CSR and, in many of these cases, the companies involved rarely did it because they were expected to do it or because there may be significant marketing capital to be made, they simply did it because it was the ‘right thing to do’.

The story is very different now – the pure motives behind and areas of action in regard to CSR have been blurred.

Gareth Pearce in his article ‘ Getting it straight’ explores the basics of corporate social responsibility and what it now means for businesses and at the stringent targets that the EU has set as objectives as part of its Europe 2020 plans.

Gareth Pearce is the Assistant Editor of Chartered Secretary, the journal of ICSA UK.  His article ‘ Getting it straight’ was first published in August 2011.
