Dr Michael Gousmett
Having completed his Doctoral thesis in 2009, The Charitable Purposes Exemption from Income Tax: Pitt to Pemsel 1798-1891, Dr Gousmett has since researched and published on the history of charitable fiscal concessions in New Zealand, and is continuing to build on his research as an independent researcher and public historian. With twenty-five year’s sector experience as a practitioner as well as a researcher, Dr Gousmett believes that the time is long overdue for a review of charity and tax law in New Zealand and of the fiscal concessions which are now being taken advantage of by trading charities to an extent he believes Parliamentarians never foresaw
Michael will provide an update on my research activities, including: commercial charities and taxation: DHBs, the capital charge and public private partnerships; and a fascinating old charity law case from one hundred years ago.
