Women on Boards Hamilton Networking Event

Seminar

Overview

Prepare to be inspired! Join fellow professional women for an evening of networking, information gathering, drinks and canapés and hear from Dr Natalie Jackson who will speak about her life as a demographer, and what is on a demographer's mind.

Educating Rita - the Demography of a Demographer
In the 1980s film 'Educating Rita', a young Liverpudlian woman seeks to rise out of her working class background by going to university. She negotiates her way through the minefield that is life for a mature student, and graduates somewhat more astute about the world around her, most of her preconceptions fundamentally challenged. Come and hear about Natalie's similar journey, interwoven with the discipline she studied - demography: the study of populations.

Guest speaker

Dr Natalie Jackson is Director of Natalie Jackson Demographics Ltd.

Previous roles include Professor of Demography and Director of the National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA) at the University of Waikato, and Adjunct Professor of Demography at Massey University.

Natalie has a PhD in Demography from the Australian National University, and Bachelor and Master degrees in Social Science from the University of Waikato. Her early academic work was on ethnic stratification and the role of demography in causing and maintaining those differentials. Today her focus is on regional population ageing, the subnational ending of population growth, and the consequences of these trends for all levels of government, the labour market, the welfare state, education and health care policy, and business in general.
