“The Governor General’s garden party was a splendid occasion enjoyed by all," reported Dr Hawarden, "especially members of the public who had won an invitation in the open ballot. During conversations with fellow guests, several disclosed that they had recently received awards for services to the country and had shown leadership in many fields. Not only was the day a day to honour the signing of the Treaty of Waitiangi, but gathered together in the lovely gardens of the restored heritage building that is Government House, the diversity of our many varied backgrounds as New Zealanders and contributions to the nation were also acknowledged and celebrated”.

The Governor-General of New Zealand, Her Excellency The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, GNZM, QSO is Governance New Zealand's Vice-Regal patron.
